BIOFILM MANAGEMENT WITH GBT IS SAFE AND INDISPENSABLE

19.11.2020

Dear EMS Friends,

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 still has us firmly in its grip, and it remains essential to be informed of the current status and latest updates. We would therefore like to call your attention to an official statement issued by the German Dental Association (BZÄK): (1)

“Provided the current rules are followed, there is no substantial risk of infection for either the dental teams or patients”. According to the president of the German Dental Association (BZÄK), Dr Peter Engel, there has been ‘no appreciable number of infections’ with COVID-19 in dental practices since the beginning of the pandemic. This has been confirmed in ‘robust data’ from Germany, Italy, South Korea and China. The president of the American Dental Association (ADA) has also emphasised that millions of patients have attended dental practices for ‘the full spectrum of dental treatment’.

Given the generally increased rate of COVID-19 infections, Dr Engel again stressed that ‘all science-based dentistry is essential care and an elementary part of medicine”. This includes supra- and subgingival biofilm management. Scientists have confirmed that the Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) developed by EMS meets the highest current scientific and technical standards (2).

Aerosol contamination can be controlled

GBT is not only medically sensible and necessary, it is also safe.  An international study carried out by EMS found microbial air contamination in direct proximity to patients (20 cm) treated with AIRFLOW® was at the same level as that in practice rooms after ventilation (3). These results were confirmed in a further as yet unpublished study with PIEZON® PS. Similarly to the AIRFLOW® study, this involved rinsing with BacterX® Pro (CHX 0,1%, CPC 0,05%, fluoride, xylitol) and use of 2-handed work with a high speed evacuation. Aerosol contamination during biofilm-management can therefore be effectively controlled. The latest EMS development is the AIRFLOW® MAX, a new handpiece, with patented GUIDED LAMINAR AIRFLOW® technology. This ensures a laminar-air-powder-water-flow – a quantum leap, for even better aerosol control and thereby substantial aerosol reduction.

A consensus statement defining GBT as the leading standard

Modern prophylaxis protects patients from caries, gingivitis, periodontitis and peri-implantitis. At the same time, it reduces the risk of numerous systemic illnesses. EMS has in recent decades worked together with numerous scientists, practitioners and engineers to enhance this protection and achieve new defining standards in professional prophylaxis and periodontal therapy. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is based on disclosing the biofilm and completely removing supra- and subgingival biofilm using minimally invasive technologies AIRFLOW® and PERIOFLOW® with Erythritol based PLUS powder and PIEZON® PS.

The consensus statement drawn up and signed by the renowned Swiss professors, Dr. Dr. h. c. Niklaus P. Lang and Dr. Adrian Lussi, dipl.chem. ETH as well as the German prophylaxis expert, Dr. Klaus-Dieter Bastendorf, confirms evidence-based clinical efficacy, in addition to patient- and user-friendly methods (2).

EMS stands for happy and healthy patients, successful practitioners and enthusiastic partners. Our mission is to do everything we can to support you. Please keep in touch and do not hesitate to contact your EMS team member for any queries you may have.

We would like to wish you – despite the restrictions – lots of energy and pleasure in your work. Please take good care of yourself, your loved ones, your colleagues and friends.

Best regards,
