Easing the pain – ergonomics in prophylaxis

Musculoskeletal pain is a common challenge for oral professionals, affecting both long-term health and quality of life. In her article, Marion von Wietersheim highlights the main causes of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in prophylaxis, including neck, shoulder and back pain as well as carpal tunnel syndrome caused by repetitive movements and static postures.

Effective prevention goes beyond individual measures. Ergonomic instruments, flexible treatment units, correct patient positioning and neutral working postures are essential. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol through its systematic approach helps reduce physical strain by limiting force-intensive manual instrumentation, allowing clinicians to stay healthy and continue doing the job they love. Von Wietersheim also stresses the importance of clear communication with patients and the integration of simple stretching and mobilization exercises into daily routines. Her conclusion is clear: ergonomics is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for sustainable, pain-free and high-quality preventive care.
